LASEK
(Laser Assisted Sub-epithelial Keratectomy) is a relatively
new eye surgery that is performed using an excimer laser to
change the shape of the cornea. The cornea is the clear covering
at the front of the eye. LASEK is ideal for people whose corneas
are too thin for LASIK.
LASEK is an outpatient procedure that takes about the same
time to complete as LASIK. An anesthetic drop is applied to
the eye, and the epithelium flap is created. After the flap
is made, an alcohol based solution is administered to loosen
the flap.
Dr. Vale then uses a surgical device to peel back the flap
to expose the cornea. An excimer laser system is then used
to reshape the cornea. Once this step is completed, the epithelium
flap is replaced, and a bandage soft contact lens is applied
to protect the eye after the procedure.
The recovery time for LASEK is normally longer than the recovery
time for LASIK, but compared to PRK, LASEK provides a more
rapid recovery and less discomfort. LASEK takes approximately
four to seven days to recover your vision. The flap usually
heals within one day, but you may encounter minor discomfort
for up to three days.
